Story

In the year 2201 Earth's space security agency detects an anomaly in the outskirts of our galaxy. Further investigation of it's radiation revealed it to be an enormous mass of dark matter, much greater than any quantity ever found. They kept an eye on it, as they were interested in the origins of such rare anomaly.

Eight years later, they noticed the mass changing direction, and it was heading towards earth. It's approach was slow, but certainly fatal.

A fleet of space ships is sent in its direction, taking few weeks to reach it somewhere near the orbit of Pluto.
The mass revealed to be a massive ship, the size of Earth's Moon. Not much could be uncovered, as the ship immediately destroyed all of the human ships.

And the same happened to anything Earth tried to throw at them.

(story to be continued)

The Game

The base game will be a lot like the original. You go around the ship in the Exploration mode, and then enter the corridors that are in Shooter mode.

This game introduces the concept of Resources, that you gather from dead enemies. They are: Energy, Biocell, Metals and Dark Matter.

-Energy replaces the Chips from the original game. It is the currency, and what your special weapons use as ammo. It's easier to find.
-Biocell is used to buy most low-level stuff, as well as health and shield refill. Can be found mostly by killing organic enemies.
-Metals are used to power physical weapons and to buy certain chips. You find it mostly by destroying scenery and metal enemies.
-Dark Matter is used in certain high-level upgrades and chips. It's really hard to find dark matter stable enough that you can pick up. Usually drops from bosses.

Character Progression

Character

- Level: You can level up just as the original game. Each level you get more HP and increase how much of each resource you can carry.

- Chips: Chips will be something like equipments in this game. You can buy them or get them from bosses.
There will be 3 types of Chips: Movement, Weapon and System.
Movement Chips affect your movements, eg: speed, dash ability
Weapon Chips affect your basic gun, eg: multiple bullets, damage against armor, shooting speed
System Chips affect other things, eg: see invisible enemies, get more item drops

Chips will each have a size, depending on how good it is, so you can equip fewer of the best ones, and more of the common ones

- Special Weapons: There will be 10 special weapons. They are separated in 3 categories and use the respective resource to be used:
Energy weapons, which uses Energy
Physical weapons, which uses Metal
and Prototype weapons, which uses Dark Matter

The type of weapon can be strategically used to deal with different types of enemies.

Other Items

- Random drops: when you kill any enemy or bullet you might get a random drop. These include health and shield refill, or resources.

Play

You can play the game that I made in two days, that started this project:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3954039/Riker%C3%B6k/game/index.html
Keys: C(confirm), X(shoot), Arrows(move)

The game is being made in HTML5, and it will be playable online for free.

Yes. There's an option in the menu. I plan on having a few colors available at the start, and then you can find extra colors throughout the game. One thing I'm intending on doing is improving the exploration bit of the game.

Also Terminator 2's John Connor has this hair style

Back in the 90-s this hairstyle was more associated with 'badass' rather then 'emo'. Take a look at this lady from UN Squadron:

These are the special weapons I have planned. The ones with an icon at the side are remakes of the ones in the game.
Not all weapons use chips as ammo

Energy weapons: Use Energy (chip) as ammo. Energy is common
Physical weapons: Use Metal as ammo. Metal is not so common
Prototype weapon: Use Dark Matter as ammo. Dark matter is rare

1- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponfireball.gif)Fireball: Energy weapon, moves slowly forward. It's slower then the original.

2- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponsword.gif)Saber Laser: Energy weapon, short range, great power. Ignores some of the enemy shield.

3- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponwave.gif)Wave: Energy weapon, long range, high speed, go through enemies, can be directed. It's a lot like the original.

4- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponrotater.gif)Orbiter: Physical weapon, orbits player. More powerful than the original.

5- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponzlaser.gif)Double Heater: Energy weapon, follows enemies, uses a lot of energy. Faster and more powerful than the original.

6- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weapontwoway.gif)Side Jet: Energy weapon, short range, position on the sides of the player, high speed. A lot more useful than the original, it's faster and goes through enemies.

7- Magnetic Rings: Physical weapon, two rings come from the back and fly forwards facing the middle of the ship, destroys shields. Covers all sides of the ship in its movement.

8- Gravitron: Energy weapon, sphere that sucks small projectiles, deals damage on enemies touching it. You shoot it and it stays in place for a while before disappearing.

9- Twin Needle: Energy weapon, shoots at the closest target, destroys shields. Shoots fast.

10- Proton Charge: Energy weapon, lay a bomb in front, explodes by collision or when another one is shot, damage is lower far from center. It's similar to the grenade but more powerful.

11- (http://theguardianlegend.com/clone/sprite-compendium_files/weaponeraser.gif)Enemy Eraser: Prototype Weapon, destroys all enemies in screen, except bosses and shielded enemies.

12- Hammerhead: Prototype Weapon, lays an energy ball that stays in front of the ship. It damages everything it touches. The energy ball disappears over time and explodes in the end.

Maybe it's just me but... is it correct I don't take any damage?
After a while, I get no enemies... but the level keeps going on.

Yeah it's a test version, so debug is turned on by default. You need to press D to turn off debug so you can take damage.
An the level just keep going forever. When I made this, it was for a 48 hours compo, so I didn't have time to make an end to the level.

And here are some new sprites
I'm separating them by theme, or alien species

These are rock aliens:

And this is a mechanical enemy for the shooter section:

Really nice  :3. Not look like rock aliens tho. An armored skin like turtle.
Are they going to fold into a sphere shape so they can fast roll around screen?(like armadilo in the games you know)

I am trying to create a little back story to each alien race. For this one:
"These spider-like creatures spend time burrowed and assimilate mineral particles into their skin. Over the years their exterior become solid as rock"

They might just roll for any angle because it's not NES and smarter algorithms can be used. Maybe when you at certain distance close to them. They might bounce of the wall so they would roll the room 2-3 times. In the armored roll mode they can get 4 times less damage :redlander:

She looks kinda anorexic for me.
Also it's up to you the type of haircut. I would not have such haircut if I was a woman warrior. It looks like for purpose to be sexy but when you battle with monsters I think such haircut might prevent to notice danger by sideview vision by that covered eye.
Overal it's pretty nice character you made.

I'm using Construct 2 (https://www.scirra.com/), cuz I'm not exactly a programmer.

Anyone can give ideas for enemies, gameplay or story if you want to. But I can't promise I'm using all ideas

Made the first 4 weapons:

In the order they are in the menu:
1: Fireball
2: Laser Saber
3: Double Heater (they would fallow enemies if there were any on screen)
4: Magnetic Rings

I still need to make it so all projectiles disappear when you change weapons, and make weapon movement account for lower fps

New map engine, now shows connections between rooms and can also display bigger room shapes. In the game there's still no bigger rooms, but I'll be working on these next.

I'll also be working on secret rooms to be displayed as blue squares on the map, but only after the player discovers them

Maybe make even bit more hole between connected rooms.
So you don't have defense - only HP?
Ecret rooms is cool. Will there be any hints where to find them or totally secret? How to open them?

I even tried other door sizes, but they look too bad

I'll probably add defense. I'm probably going to remove the "Gun Type" because that's not adding much to the game, and in the place of that in the menu I'll put the defense

Some secret passages will have clues, like some blocks indicating a wall that can be blasted through.

Is it possible to set a event trigger where  certain parts of a particular area is inaccessible until you obtain certain items in game? [Other than unlocking certain areas because you have the Key to it like in the actual TGL; but the mechanism would be identical]

For example, certain part of Area 6 is only accessible if you buy a "key" to it for 7000 Chips.

I was just messing about with Super Star Force for the NES [http://theguardianlegend.com/forum/index.php/topic,1768.0.html ] again recently and i thought about using elements from that game into this one.

Title: Re: Riker?k - A Guardian Legend inspired game

I believe I finished the map system and the menu screen. I'm moving the extra information to another screen, and for that I'm adding 2 more buttons, L and R, that will be used in the game to quickly change weapons.

Unexplored areas are dark and don't show the passages between them. This way you reveal the map as you explore, and the map serves more as a guidance and so that you don't get lost.
There's also a dot that shows where your next objective is, if there's any.

Now I'll work on more interesting stuff, because none of you wants to keep seeing menu screens, right?

I think now I'll start working on enemy behavior for the exploration part.
First I'll make those rocky enemies that roll at you

Hey dudes!

It's been a while right? Sadly not much has been going on. I was working on other things, so this project got on hold.
Lately I've been working more on the story, because I decided I want this game to have an utterly epic story!

One of the changes is that now the game will feature multiple characters that you will interact with. You will also play the shooter parts with them as partners

This is the new portraits I've been working on, which also show something it's still a secret :3

Alright, so here are the news:

1. Cutting out a few features for the sake of finishing this game some day
I decided to give up on all the plans I had for a great story. Having multiple characters and a complex story would add too much work.
Also keep in mind I'm not fluent in english, so that would also be a big issue when creating a story with a lot of dialogue.
That doesn't mean the game wont have a story; but it will be a lot simpler

2. New system: Chips (not the chips from TGL)
So, I came up with this system that will handle all the player customization in the game. Chips will be something like equipments in this game. You can buy them or get them from bosses

3. New type of room: Hive
This is one other type of room that you find in the exploration part. Similarly to the optional mini-bosses, you can choose not to fight the hive.
The hive consists of a spawner in the center of the room that will create waves of enemies. Once you kill all the enemies you are awarded with a prize

1] D: !! Oh well.
So wait, you're not a native speaker? I always throught you were...

2] so, kind of like Megaman Zero? Now i wonder how it would be if we were able to combine two different weapons together (like in Gunstar Heroes)
Invisible enemies? D:

well, have fun :D will be interested in seeing a public demo (i wonder if it's Fraps recordable...)

1. I'm brazillian :)

2. I played megaman zero but I don't even remember... but there is something similar that I remember, from megaman battle network: (this is the best example I could find) (http://youtu.be/Hrj44L9ccMw?t=4m12s)

2.5. There will be some enemies that use camouflage, and enemies that disappear and then appear somewhere else for a surprise attack

2.75. It is Fraps recordable

Your english seems fluent to me. In any event, maybe there could be a few of us who could review the script/story to check it for grammar. There are at least some potential work-arounds if you don't want to give up on the bigger story line.

What Golbez said. You could prioritise the gameplay first, and leave some spaces for the story later? Maybe when the time comes we can all chip in and come up with something awesome :D just feel free to ask. :bluelander: , at least you can include some sort of dialogues for weapon shops, repair shops (if there will be some) and major mission briefings (again, if there will be some).

That just gave me an idea - the two main protagonists each have a different storyline of their own and frequently meet up at various points in game?

after all, i am getting some of my own Guardian Fighter characters designed, so maybe they can get cameo appearances

Voc? ? brasileiro? Interessante...

There will be a story. So far I don't have many details, but I'm thinking something where you start to find out more about the ship as you explore it, and there might be some mystery about it...

Here are all weapons I made so far
Keep in mind weapons are not yet balanced, these gifs are also not a good representation of the speed in-game

1st weapon: Fireball
Powerful and slow-moving ball of fire. Moves slowly and can hit multiple times as it pass through enemies.
Best against: Big and slow enemies

Level 1:

Level 3:

2nd weapon: Saber
Short range laser. Drains energy fast and deals a lot of damage
Best against: Slow enemies you can get near, enemies that moves directly towards you

Level 1:

Level 3:

3rd weapon: Double Heater
You create two balls of energy that float around you, targeting enemies as they appear. They use energy while they are on screen, and keeping two heaters will use even more energy.
Best against: Spread out groups of enemies, fast-moving enemies

Level 1:

Level 3:

4th weapon: Magnetic Rings
Shoots magnetic metal rings backwards, then propel them forwards, covering a wide area around you.
Best against: Enemies far away, enemies behind you

Level 1:

Level 3:

5th weapon: Gravity Well
Creates an area of strong gravity that sucks bullets and deals damage to enemies.
Best against: Enemies that shoot a lot, big enemies, enemies with predictable movement

Level 1:

Level 3:

6th weapon: Orbiter
Use your metal to create an orbiting blade that hurts enemies on collision. It serves as a shield against bullets.
Can only endure a certain number of hits before breaking, then you need to use it again.
Best against: Small enemies, close-quarters situations

Level 1:

Level 3:

7th weapon: Wave
Creates fast-moving sound waves that go through enemies.
Best against: Groups of enemies, resilient enemies, fast-moving enemies

Weapon 8: Twin sabre/side cutter [and maybe when it's upgraded to level 3, the player can press another button to have it spin around once instead of it constantly on the side], useful if you're getting swarmed

Weapon 9: "Shield" - a la "Mana Shield" in other RPGs, insteadof taking damage fully through HP, the shield will absorb some for you instead  (e.g., a hit that takes 7 HP will instead end up with a 4HP + 450Chips), useful if one's low on health but high on chips

just some ideas

==

Sabre 3: I like how the character was going upwards but the sabre was still hitting to the left XD

Heaters 3: wouldn't fast moving energyballs like in the example make it having lower hit accuracy than the slower one?

==

When a power up capsule shows up after defeating an enemy, wouldn't it be easier for the box to just show up instead of flashing as it appears? Might be easier on the graphics when it comes to recording

Could be a grenade similar to original but with some difference. With ability to blow when you want. So when you throw it and then press button again it detonates the grenade.

Your weapon 8 idea is similar to what I had in mind for my weapon 8 :P

Saber 3: it has a delay before disappearing, so you can still see it after I let the button go

Heater 3: it moves faster but it also targets enemies faster, so in fact it has more accuracy than the slower one

Capsule: The flashing is from the jet section, where the capsule will flash in place so you have time to shoot at it, before it starts moving down. I'll remove that for the exploration part

That's my idea for weapon 9

It's all fine now, luckly ^^

If you use tumblr and want to follow the game, I made a tumblr blog just to post news about this game http://rikerokdevlog.tumblr.com/
So you can just go there and click the +follow button. It's empty now but I'll update it when I get anything new

re: the new art style on the recent Tumblr post.

she looks kind of like a typical space marine like that than a guardian fighter XD, must be the lack of the folded flight module on her back; i like it though. :bluelander:

might see if i can get fanarts of her >_>

Hi. I stumbled on this place by chance when trying to re-ignite my memories of this game for a Worlds of Power parody thing. I'm completely blown away by the work I see here. The weapons in particular and the different chip system sounds interesting.

For the record, I'm pro Shield and Proximity Mines or Delay Mines for special weapons:)

Story-wise, I promote the idea of keeping it simple yet interesting. Focus on providing an interesting look at the game's world and it's history. Maybe a twist where Naju reaching Earth is actually a good thing for the rest of the galaxy. I think themes of reflection and loneliness are smart to use here as the setting already supports them, they require less resources (less characters/dialogue) and can be reflected on in interesting ways when the main character isn't human.

I'd say the only bad thing (well, not bad. Just worth improving upon) is DP's redesign on the tumblr page a few posts back. The art itself is great but I feel it's far too generic looking. For those of us who grew up with this game, the character's distinct style with visibly noticeable transformation components was an instant winning factor. Mecha musume and similar styles were pretty much unheard of, especially outside of Japan. So she was kind of a first. I get overjoyed when I'm searching pixiv and she pops up, and the first time that happened I admit I got a bit teary-eyed with nostalgia. It'd be sad if others who didn't stumble on it like I did couldn't get that same feeling.

I just think that, if anything, the character should be instantly recognizable.

I'm not meaning to end on a low note because the work here is beyond exceptional. Just giving my 2 cents. Best of luck with the project. I'll certainly be popping back here every so often to check up on it, and I'll help spread the word.
