I really appreciated it Arseniy, nice touch! Is it effective?

Ok, so my work is a bit on-off lately. I'm running some things that take hours to complete, yet not enough to just let me go completely off work. Sometimes I just find myself slacking. As I check out those forums, I recall our past efforts with the Naju Nexus experiment.
I have been an avid RPG player in the past and I've tried at running a few games as a DM with admittedly little success. I wonder if there's any interest in trying something which is somewhat RPG-like on those forums.

The setting would be much, much sooner than TGL would take place, with Naju very likely in the early stages of detection with system DP possibly already prototyped but yet not finalized so a variation would be possible. I have to admit there's a good chance there will be only a very loose connection with TGL. As a fact, I was thinking at something more like EinhanderZwei's work with his set of characters and coherent universe. So, somehow, there would be those "guardians" somehow running around and trying to cope with various mess.

Each character would be given the possibility to choose his or her own path, their decisions would be in your control but how the story unfolds would be narrator's responsibility, the narrator will likely rotate, with his/her character eventually fading to background and most likely temporarily retiring to inactivity.

The inner working of this experiment have been inspired by a blog I have been following about a game the author tried recently. This game ditches dice throws and stats to inspire a collaborative-like story telling. Basically each player in this game was allowed to elaborate his/her character's action as described above and the result would essentially be based on how well the description of the action would fit the character's description.

I might have to formalize that a bit more to cater with forum usage, it's not like I have everything clear in my mind, it's just an idea. Is there anyone interested in trying something more?

Since I have to keep myself focused, I often keep skype closed. Last week however I decided to give it a go. A friend of mine popped in and started telling me his totally awesome idea for making money: bitcoin mining.
I never looked at this thing in detail and I'm still not sure it's worth but it seems to be fairly interesting, if not only from a technical perspective.
Anyway, it turns out he already went ahead and bought 90 EUR of mining hardware... and then found a video of a dude saying he won't break even any time soon. With more powerful hardware, bought at almost half the price!
This mining thing is totally crazy! Not only obsolescence is super-fast, but people is burning a lot of money into this.
Sure bitcoin is good at that: it built quite some industry at least.
As for me, since I have access to cheap electricity, I am considering Litecoin GPGPU mining. If I can manage to pay for half of a vidcard upgrade I would be rather happy with it but it looks like even in my case this is fairly difficult.

Are you aware of what's going on?

General Talk - simple and fun / End-of-the-year salutes

Hello! It has been a while since my last post. I've been through a few things, on the pro side, my sis gave me an awesome idea for an edutainment game. My friends arranged me a very nice (and affordable) vacation this year's eve. I hope it is the start of a better year, and I wish the same can be for you!

Games / Cargo Commander

A game by "Serious Brew", I bought on humble bundle (or maybe Indie Royale) for 1 USD quite some time ago. I left it sitting in my HD for no real reason up to now - I guess real life took too much.

It's a procedurally generated game. You get to visit the various sectors in space, the content is generated by the name you give the sector. Every sector is then pooled in a server for global rankings!
Of course I'm going through TGL-themed sectors!

Ok, let's get back for a moment. What is the game, before going to the worshipping?

You have a container house floating in space. The game is divided in "waves"... it's not a tower defense though! When ready to start a wave, pull a lever in on the bridge. After a few seconds, containers will start colliding with your house and you got to explore them to retrieve the goodies.
The gameplay mechanic is surprisingly compact yet rich. I think we could describe it as action platformer.
Give this game a try if you can - standard price is 9.99.

That said, here are a few TGL-related sectors I tried:

  • TGL - this is unfortunately a fairly unremarkable sector
  • Alyssa - easy, well flowing
  • Naju - easy, packed with goodies and a good mix of enemies
  • Redlander - nice challange, a lot of goodies
  • Miria - don't go there, cannot be solved.
  • Optomon, Fleepa - unfortunately, pretty much unremarkable
  • Corridors, surface - low on action and goodies, not much fun :(

Stay away from:

  • oort - I believe this one cannot be solved "cleanly", must catch the pass in open space before it is warped away

Games / Strike suit zero

What a new idea!
QuoteIn the year 2299, an interstellar war rages on. In a bid to save Earth from destruction, you must take control of the Strike Suit ? a revolutionary fighter craft with the ability to transform into a lethal suit of space armor.
Rings a few bells

General Talk - simple and fun / My turn to show something
November 22, 2012, 03:42:43 AM
Since I've seen some games besides TGL around here (I think it was blaster master) I think it might be the case to show off something.
After all, we have to keep alive the basic fact we're the most f****** creatively awesome community on the interwebs. So. I told Arseniy first I was working on a Snake Rattle n Roll remake. Here's a snapshot from an important milestone: finally running on Intel 1st gen Atom. It goes by the name of "project Snakes to the moon" or STTM for short.

A snapshot of the original game is embedded. I hope they look similar enough!
Of course there are still plenty of things to do before I leave it in the wild. I have somewhat re-evaluated the Atom. It's usable. I guess I actually did a far better job than I really intended.
Still please don't buy intel atom. I've heard last atom is good but still, please don't.

Games / The Humble Indie Bundle

Check it out dudes
https://www.humblebundle.com/

Opportunity to get those games super cheap (just in case you don't want to torrent them).
6 games for less than 6 USD including soundtracks.
I've played Shatter, Torchlight and Vessel so far, they are quite good. Except Torchlight, which is excellent!

Ok, see there's some people around here which is in game development... to a certain degree... and in general inclined to "run his business" and "get the job done".
I'd like to ask you how do you promote what you do.
I am going to participate to small "promotional networking inter-meeting" two weeks for now. I don't have much hope but given the low price tag (only 12 EU) I'm going to give it a try. I guess it's the right time to start thinking about it.
Suggestions?

Check out this nintendo-based comic. It's pretty fun. The author, Mattew is in my opinion fairly smart, the "musical strips" are really good.

Although I disagree with his interpretation of Samus...

Games / STALKER with LURK
August 06, 2011, 10:55:44 AM
I have decided to take some time off.
In search for inspiration, I'm going for my 2nd run through STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl, this time with the LURK mod.
Where is the thread for STALKER? It should be there. Looks like it's very popular in ex-Russian countries.

General Talk - simple and fun / CAPTCHAs
July 17, 2011, 10:33:19 AM
Hey Arseniy, I tried to sign a new form today. Their CAPTCHA was outrageous. I haven't got it a single time! Looks like bots are now better than be at doing this! LOL

Ok, I've been writing about this for a while now and toyed a bit with the idea.
Vector sprites have plenty of room for accurate precision work. This eventually got me sidetracked as I spent more and more time on building useless detail. I've been trying to draw everything in 2D fake 3D first but I'm not good at it. Then tried with some enemies with little success. Then I tried to compare with different scalers available in NEStopia (nearest neighbor, 2xSAI, hq2x, ScaleX) but this was still far from being meaningful: they cannot fill a screen nowadays. They are fairly good at reconstructing curves but no extra detail can be added.

Quotean infinite, recursive, tactical shooter for one player by Jason Rohrer
In my opinion, it is more like a single player point-and-shift puzzle/pattern game with strong SHMUP elements.

It takes a while to understand the workings and a single sequence of lucky random numbers can skyrocket you to high levels (I went up to 42 in two days!) but it is very interesting.

I think there might be a method to force you in adapting to different scenarios, but I am not sure.
I got it for 5 USD but Jason is selling it for 1.95 or something like that... have a look at it, it's a nice game.

Ok, I'll be honest. For me, it's a terrible timewaster. I'm several hours late on my timetable now!

Rom Hacks, MODs, Plugins / Tiles, sprites
January 26, 2011, 06:32:24 AM
Inspired by the awesome awesomeness of the recent vector galore, I now wonder if it is possible to have all the sprites in a single place... I'd try convert them to vectors.
I think I've seen some around here in the forum, or perhaps in some links. Can someone give me an insight in pulling out the sprites/tiles?

Introduction Area / Landing sequence completed
October 27, 2010, 10:15:21 AM
Hello everyone!
After countless years of navigating in the large, limitless space that is internet, I somehow got there. I've orbited around the forums for a while after deciding to register. Now that I'm here, I wonder how I missed this place for so much time!

This is a game which literally haunted me for a while. Quite a while I have to add, and I still remember the pain of those passwords. I have a love-hate relationship with those games of the past. Blocky, buzzing, few colors and a lot of flickering sprites in a moving mosaic of pixels. I find hard to believe I once considered this colorful, sharp, smooth, tech. But the fun factor is still unquestioned.

For The Guardian Legend this steered quite clearly to the "love" side of things, as most NES games I had the honor to buy. I believe this was due to the sheer amount of time it took me to finish it the first time (I think I finished it twice, or maybe three times up to now), it took years the first time!
I believe the challenge really helped me in perceiving this as good, even in the days the NES were starting to rot, as I always considered it to be ongoing business.

Looking back, I suppose TGL could actually be the source of my English, together with "Picked up a clip" from Doom, a few years later.

If memory serves, I got stuck for a lot of time in the first level. As a child, I found the shooter sections pretty difficult, and the boss is quite hard with that puny gun. They did good in putting those star enemies here, the joy of finally being able to blast'em many hours later is epic. I was quite surprised when the Guardian landed and it became a maze exploration game. Sure, it was on the back of the box (EU BTW) but being this my absolutely first game after Mario, the mechanics were fresh and interesting.

Where do I went from there? I don't quite remember. I have downloaded a complete map of the game, maybe it will help me figuring out my path.

This has been written after a whole day of button mashing so I suppose that's enough for today. Wish you all a good day/night/whatever. UserK out.
