Are 16:9 Wide screen videos recommended?

I see most of you guys upload videos on YouTube with 4:3 aspect ratio, but YouTube uses 16:9 aspect ratio to play a video. I have been always using that aspect ratio (with 1280x720 dimension). Do you recommend this aspect ratio? Please share your opinion.

I think usually the letsplayers add something on the sides when they go for such resolution. And others don't bother. Youtube plays any resolution.
