Armada for Dreamcast. It is a shootemup/rpg hybrid with some VERY nice gameplay ideas, but the game is semi-finished. it was intended to be released as a MMORPG and in the end was released this version of it only. There is also a sequel MMORPG for the pc called Armada online. Cool game!

if the new tgl game in the making will be 3D, maybe this is the type of gameplay that could be looked at.

Even if we can afford 3d gfx I think it's still better to keep vertical scrolling SHMUP + top down adventure.

yup personally i agree, just thought i would post this as a general idea as i saw a there was a bit of a 2d/3d debate

If the game is great some would want to play it by your recommendation :)

well,
it is a game in my opinion that COULD have been great. the gameplay is fun and smooth, but the game seems half finished and the story/rpg elements are only half there. I really liked it personally it is very addictive blasting those Armada creatures, but a good friend of mine that we play oldies together absolutley hated this game and found it pointless so... ;)
